This is confirmation of the Grace Workshop on June 4th. It will be in the Sheraton Four Points in San Jose, in the MILPITAS room. Four Points by Sheraton San Jose 211 S First Street San Jose, CA 95113 United States of America Phone: 1 (408) 282-8800 The workshop will include lunch, which will be $17 plus tip, and which I'm going to ask you to pay me for. This is part of the deal in getting the hotel room. (If you wish, or it's easier for your expenses, you can pay me a workshop fee of $50, for which I'll give yo a receipt. Grace Workshop

Folks, There is enough interest in the Grace Workshop to get a conference room. I have a reasonable quote for this from the Four Points by Sheraton in San Jose, which is also the hotel at which I'll be staying on from Saturday night onwards. However, I have not confirmed the room, because it is still too early to expect an answer from the west coast. I'm currently stranded at Heathrow, because of a volcano, but hope to have this sorted before I leave. If you feel that you will be able to come, and have not yet email me our name, please do so when you get a chance. Grace workshops in the Bay Area (June 4) and Lancaster (30 July)

Dear Grace Supporters We are planning to hold a number of Grace workshops in 2011 to get expert feedback, to report progress, to discuss challenges, and hopefully to involve others more closely in the project. After the successful European workshops a few months ago, we are planning to hold a workshop in California in early June, and workshops with ECOOP (30 July) and SPLASH/OOPSLA (data tba) We hope some - many! - of you may be able to come to one or both of these workshops. If you think you could make one or other, then please let us know by emailling James, kjx(a)ecs,vuw.ac.nz. There has been little visible project in the last couple of months, generally because we have been working on other (paid) projects. We are hoping to re-establish momentum in the design in conjunction with the workshops - focusing particularly on the type system and model system for Grace, and also reflecting on questions raised by some initial implementation efforts. cheers James (& Andrew & Kim)

Grace spec 0.095 and Grace workshops

Hi all so a milestone of sorts: we've come up with our first specification: http://gracelang.org/documents/grace-spec0095.pdf This specification is very incomplete, however it should give the flavour of the language design so far, particularly the sequential and object-oriented features. Major missing features include types, encapsulation, modules, and a formal grammar. We'd welcome comments - either on the blog, or back via email, or at the workshops on Sunday (Darmstadt) or Monday (London). If you've let us know you're coming, we should have emailed you the details - if you don't get that email (or want to come anyway) just drop us a line. let us know what you think, and looking forwards to catching up with some of you next week. cheers Andrew, Kim, James

Dear Grace Supporters Due to my inability to read emails or calendars, I advertised the wrong date for the Darmstadt workshop: This actually needs to happen on Sunday 27th February (rather than Saturday). Grace workshops in Europe & UK Feb 2011; Grace blog back up;

Dear Grace Supporters We have been planning to hold a number of Grace workshops in 2011 to get expert feedback, to report progress, to discuss challenges, and hopefully to involve others more closely in the project. Our first two potential dates are in February, when Andrew & James (at least) will be in the UK and Europe. Our current thoughts on potential times are: * Saturday 26th Feburary, in Darmstadt (after the ECOOP PC meeting) * Monday 28th February in the UK (most likely London) We hope some - many! - of you may be able to come to one or both of these workshops. If you think you could make one or other, then please let us know by emailling James, kjx(a)ecs,vuw.ac.nz. Once we have sufficient interest, we'll confirm the dates and venues. Some of you may have noticed some problems with the Grace blog this week - due mainly to issues with our commercial hosting provider. Gracelang.org - and the blog - are now hosted at Victoria University of Wellington, in New Zealand, thanks to the ECS programming team & friends. So while it make take a little longer to load, it should always be there. Progress on New OO language "Grace"

Dear Grace Supporters This is another brief update on our progress on the Grace project to date. We have been working our way through the language design, and have sketched out "version 0.1" drafts of most of the main operational language constructs. We're starting to think about type and module systems. We are posting these as design notes (Gracenotes :-) to the blog at http://gracelang.org - and we'd really appreciate your comments if you have time to look over the posts there. We have found that blog posts and attached comments make it easier to organise discussions than carrying on conversations on mailing lists. We hope you'll subscribe to the blog, there are RSS feeds for posts - http://gracelang.org/applications/feed/ and comments - http://gracelang.org/applications/comments/feed/ (these are also available at the bottom of the blog page) and, as you have time, to provide comments and feedback. We do want this to be as open a process as possible. If you would like posting rights on the blog, you will need to send black(a)cs.pdx.edu a username and cleartext password. Finally, we are starting to plan some Grace meetings next year: * UK/Europe late February - around the time of the ECOOP PC meeting * West Coast US late May/early June - meeting aligned with PLDI * Lancaster late July - before or after ECOOP * Portland late October - before or after OOPSLA We are starting to think seriously about the February meeting. Progress on New OO language "Grace"

Dear Supporters This is a brief update on our progress on the new OO language project to date, an outline of our plans for the near future, and a suggestion of some ways in which you could become more directly involved. In the four months since ECOOP, we (Kim Bruce, Andrew Black and James Noble) have made some progress on the language design. We have refined the principles from the manifesto, and identified a target user model for the language. We are working towards a "strawman" language design, which we hope will be ready for your critique by the end of the year. We have chosen a name for the language: Grace. Last week, we formally announced the project to the wider OOPL community with two panels at OOPSLA/SPLASH - one at the educators' symposium and one at the main conference, the later also including Alex Buckley and Jens Palsberg as discussants who were not part of the language effort. We've attached the slides we presented at the panel. The panel was covered in the CACM blog: http://cacm.acm.org/blogs/blog-cacm/100389-grace-a-manifesto-for-a-new-educ… and also reported by other bloggers. While it is still early, we feel that the panels were generally well received, and several new people have indicated they support the effort - and perhaps that they will be able to contribute substantially in the new year. As part of ensuring that the language design work is as open as possible, we have established a rudimentary web-site and blog for the project, at http://gracelang.org. We plan to try to write short articles at least weekly to provide evidence of ongoing progress in the project. We have also established a mailing list, grace-interest(a)cs.pdx.edu, for supporters and others interested in the project.
