Research Papers Onward! is a premier multidisciplinary conference focused on everything to do with programming and software: including processes, methods, languages, communities, and applications. Onward! is more radical, more visionary, and more open than other conferences to ideas that are well-argued but not yet proven. We welcome different ways of thinking about, approaching, and reporting on programming language and software engineering research. Essays is looking for clear and compelling pieces of writing about topics important to the software community. An essay can be an exploration of a topic, its impact, or the circumstances of its creation; it can present a personal view of what is, explore a terrain, or lead the reader in an act of discovery; it can be a philosophical digression or a deep analysis. It can describe a personal journey, perhaps by which the author reached an understanding of such a topic. The subject area should be interpreted broadly and can include the relationship of software to human endeavors, or its philosophical, sociological, psychological, historical, or anthropological underpinnings. SPLASH workshops complement the main tracks of the conference and provide meetings in a smaller and more specialized setting. Workshops cultivate new ideas and concepts for the future, optionally recorded in formal proceedings. We invite high quality papers reporting original research, innovative contributions, or experience related to dynamic languages, their implementation, and applications. The term “software language” is used broadly, and includes: general-purpose programming languages; domain-specific languages (e.g. BPMN, Simulink, Modelica); modeling and metamodeling languages (e.g. SysML and UML); data models and ontologies (e.g. XML-based and OWL-based languages and vocabularies). SLE solicits high-quality contributions in areas ranging from theoretical and conceptual contributions to tools, techniques, and frameworks in the domain of language engineering. We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Engineering and Computer Science, Victoria University of Wellington, based in Wellington, New Zealand. This is a two year fixed term position. The main objective of this position is to conduct high quality research in Programming Languages and Software Engineering, within the Grace Programming Langauge design project (gracelang.org) This will include design, implementation, and support work on the Grace language, Grace libraries, interactive and livecoding development environments, and open-source community building. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to teaching in Software Engineering and Computer Science. Candidates must have a PhD in Programming Languages or Object-Orientation and a good research and publication track record in these areas. Call for PARTICIPATION ** THE 2014 UPMARC SUMMER SCHOOL ** The 2014 UPMARC Summer School on Multicore Computing focuses on research trends for scalable and correct multicore programs and systems and will take place at Uppsala University, Sweden in July 28th and 29th, 2014. This year, the school is colocated with ECOOP, the European Conference on Object Oriented Programming, and its associated events. The school is subsidized by the UPMARC research programme of Uppsala University (seehttp://upmarc.se). Courses The school consists of a number of lectures and talks from international leaders in their field: * Cormac Flanagan, University of California, Santa Cruz Stephen Freund, Williams College Analysis techniques to detect concurrency errors * Viktor Vafeiadis, Max Planck Institute for Software Systems Program logics for relaxed memory consistency * Simon McIntosh-Smith, University of Bristol An introduction to many-core parallel computing with OpenCL * Viktor Klang, TypeSafe Dr. Streamlove or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the flow In addition, the school will include a session where participants can present posters and demos of their own research in the area of multicore/parallel computing. School Objective The objective of this year's summer school is to offer foundational tutorials accompanied by a selection of exiting new emerging technologies in the areas of analysis for finding errors in concurrent programs, on program logics for reasoning about program correctness in the presence of relaxed memory consistency, on programming multicore systems using OpenCL and Scala/Akka, all given by leading experts of the community. We aim to attract graduate students and young scientists and, through tutorials and lectures, prepare them for research on identifying and addressing fundamental challenges that will enable all programmers to leverage the potential performance from the ongoing shift to multicore programming. News from Grace-land

A few news items to share with you. Last week, James Noble and Andrew Black were both at PLDI in Beijing, and gave a short Grace tutorial. We had some interesting discussions with the participants, which included both teachers and language designers, and are encouraged by the growing interest in Grace We also heard last week that the paper "Grace: the absence of (inessential) difficulty" that we had submitted to Onward! has been accepted. A copy of the submission is on the Gracelang web site. ( http://gracelang.org/documents/onward-draft2012.pdf ) Over the next month we will be revising the paper in line with the requests made by the referees, so if you have comments, suggestions, or hints on areas needing clarification, this would be an excellent time to send them to us. Finally, a reminder that a prototype implementation of Grace, called minigrace, is available (start at http://gracelang.org/applications/minigrace/ ). The compiler is written in Grace, and is complete enough to compile itself, so although there is much work that still needs to be done, we are making progress. A few students and professors in Wellington, Pomona and Portland are spending their winters and summers writing Grace code. If you just want to try out some simple scripts, minigrace will run in any javascript-enabled web browser: no download or installation is needed. Grace @ ECOOP+PLDI; release of minigrace

Hi all Several Grace folks will be at ECOOP+PLDI in Beijing in this week. In particular: • Mon 11 June – Michael Homer will talk about Grace at STOP • Wed 13 June – James Noble will give a PLDI tutorial on Grace Andrew will be in Beijing for the PLDI half of the week, and James and Michael around for the whole week. If you’re interested in Grace, come to one of these talks, or we’d love to catch up with you some other time this week. In other news, we have (slowly) released "minigrace", an early prototype compiler for Grace, that handles most of the dynamically typed parts of the language, and is getting better on types & generics. Minigrace was built in Wellington by Michael Homer, with Tim Jones & Jan Larres joining in this year. minigrace is nowhere near production quality: but it does work - it is self-hosted on C, on JavaScript (accessible on a web page), and (temporarily) to Java. Grace BOFs & Design Workshops at SPLASH (OOPSLA)

Dear Grace Supporters We're now planning the next Grace workshop(s) in Portland Oregon in conjunction with the SPLASH conference. Based on the successful ECOOP workshops, at this stage we're thinking of holding: * a BOF on Monday Oct 24 in the evening -- after the Educators' Symposium, the Dynamic Languages' Symposium, PLOP, and the workshops (including Plateau & FOOL) which are on Sunday and Monday. All three of us will be there for a general report-back on the project to date. * a Design Workshop on Friday Oct 28th (the day after the conference) working over open questions in the design in detail (probably the module & type systems). This will be held at Portland State University, an easy tram ride from the conference venue & hotels. We expect some people would stay only for the morning, others til mid-afternoon. We'd love to see as many of you as possible at the BOF and at design workshop. If you're able to come, please let us know by emailing James, kjx(a)ecs.vuw.ac.nz, so we have some idea who's coming. Alterantively, if there is are reasons why the proposed dates don't work --- but other dates might --- again let us know! Andrew & James will be around for all SPLASH, so we'll also be able to catch up then. We'll probably arrange to go out for dinner on the Thursday evening after the conference (before the Friday workshop), and we can probably organise another BOF during the conference if many people can attend neither Monday nor Friday. We look forward to catching up with everyone at SPLASH/OOPSLA this year, and hope may of you will be able to come to the BOF and the workshop. cheers Andrew & Kim & James

Grace @ ECOOP today

Hi, We have arranged for a room for a Grace presentation/discussion at ECOOP tonight at 5:15 p.m. Please come to George Fox lecture theater 5/6 for the presentation. We will go out to dinner somewhere after the session (suggestions on where to go are welcome). If you would like to learn more about Grace but cannot come to that session, please contact me or James at the meetings this week and we will make time to meet with you. We are anxious for feedback on our language design, so please come if you can. Kim
