Dear faculty advisors and graduate students, An exciting College-wide event is in the works: PhD Day on May 15th, 2026 in SMSU*. **We are encouraging faculty advisors to discuss this opportunity with their PhD/MS*/Undergrad research* students and encourage them to participate.* Please contact undergraduate students directly about participating in this event, and I can send them the invitation. This is a research showcase connecting students *at every level *with advanced scholarship and discovery. PhD Day highlights the work of PhD students while creating opportunities for undergraduate and master’s students to also engage in research presentation, feedback, and academic community‑building. The program features poster sessions,Thesis-in-180-seconds (T180) presentations, keynote talks, and awards recognizing excellence across degree levels. PhD students will have the option to present a poster or Thesis-in-180-seconds (T180) presentation. The American Public Works Association (APWA) is offering two scholarships to CEE students worth $3500 and $2500 respectively, wtih applications due by end of day on *Tuesday March 31st*. All that is required to submit for both scholarships are: 1. A complete application form (attached) 2. 3/20/2026 - Possibility of FAB Card Access disruptions

OIT is in the process of implementing major changes to the card access control systems on campus. They have moved up the schedule for FAB and there are two changes happening that could affect us in FAB on Friday, March 20. 1) The badge/card readers in FAB will be cut over to a new control system. Areas of FAB may encounter brief periods of non-functioning card access intermittently as they change from panel to panel. They are hoping to work on elevators and parking first and then the rest of the building. CPSO is expected to be on hand to deal with emergency access needs. 2) Simultaneously, the automated lists for granting building and parking access on campus are switching to a different (dynamic) feed mechanism. This is projected to be a seamless operation that is not visible to users. If there are issues, MCECS people would be mostly affected by FAB parking garage access. There will be REBOOTS of all MCECS supported Windows Servers at 6 PM on Friday, March 13th, 2026. This work should be completed by 7 PM. This will include the Windows Homedirs (N: drives) and roaming profiles, access to Stashes, Printing, Networked Applications and Network Licenses. This work is needed to ensure that Windows Updates have been applied to our Servers. It is best to logout from your Windows account prior to that time. Patches will be released for CAT supported Windows 11 Workstations on Wednesday (3/11/2026). Desktops that have not been patched should reboot for patches at 6 PM Friday evening. On Thursday, February 26th, we will be patching all our Linux systems. Some urgent updates need to be applied. While the work will mainly affect Linux based systems and services, Windows users’ access to stashes could be impacted during the Linux patching. The work will begin at 8pm and components of the work could stretch on until midnight. The work involves patching and rebooting most Linux hosts (Ubuntu and Rocky9 distros). This includes file servers and computer lab Linux systems. Expect sporadic outages as the patching progresses. Systems/services affected will include: - linux.cs.pdx.edu - ada/babbage/dbclass/quizors - CS - CS Linux lab systems in FAB 88 - CS - linux.cecs.pdx.edu - ruby/rita - general MCECS - Linux systems in FAB 55-17 - general MCECS - phobos/deimos/mo/auto - ECE - openVPN - Linux home directories and research stashes - Windows access to project/research stashes We will work with our users on dedicated research systems to schedule an acceptable time to patch them. However, file server downtimes will also affect them regardless. Make sure that you have saved any open files and logged out before the reboots begin. CEE Students, Dr. Jill Marshall is offering an elective this spring that is open to all civil and environmental engineering majors: "Sensing the Earth". The class will meet on Fridays from 11 AM to 3 PM (with breaks) to allow for field trips and substantive in-class work time. From Dr. Marshall: "You can read more about it in the attached PDF. The class is focused on developing site-specific sensor plans for 2 locations 1) near PDX with high liquefaction potential - and - where 90% of Oregon's liquid fuel is handled (eek!), and 2) at a landslide-prone site in Portland's West Hills. Like previous year classes, I aim to attract students from multiple complementary disciplines (e.g. Geology, Geography, Environmental Science and Management). Teams will workshop site-specific assessment and monitoring plans for the two sites based on analyzing existing data and after observations from field visits to each of the sites. At the landslide site, we will work with landslide experts from the OR Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMAI) to restore some of the existing site sensors. We need to do an “off-cycle” downtime for the Windows File Server that delivers N: drives, user profiles, and dept shares. The downtime should begin at 9pm on Friday, Jan 23 and shouldn’t last more than 30 minutes (in reality a lot less, hopefully). During the work, CAT supported Windows computers (desktops and laptops) will cease to function properly as roaming user profiles and other critical storage locations disappear for the duration. We strongly recommend that Windows users log out for the evening. If you left your computer on during the work, you may want to reboot it before using it next. This work is not expected to affect any Linux systems. The International Student Mentor Program (ISMP) is now accepting applications for the 2026-2027 academic year. The ISMP is designed to provide ongoing assistance to incoming international students admitted to Portland State University. Each term, peer mentors assist new international students in the transition from their respective countries to our university by connecting with students before they arrive in Portland, assisting with the International Student Orientations, and serving as a cultural bridge and a resource to new students during their first term at PSU. Applicants can be from any cultural background, department, and educational level. There will be REBOOTS of all MCECS supported Windows Servers at 6 PM on Friday, January 16th, 2026. This work should be completed by 7 PM. This will include the Windows Homedirs (N: drives) and roaming profiles, access to Stashes, Printing, Networked Applications and Network Licenses. This work is needed to ensure that Windows Updates have been applied to our Servers. It is best to logout from your Windows account prior to that time. Patches have already been released for CAT supported Windows 11 Workstations on Wednesday (1/14/2026). Desktops that have not been patched should reboot for patches at 6 PM Friday evening. This work is not expected to affect any Linux systems. Yes, it’s happening on a holiday but just in case people are trying to use it, be aware that we will be bringing down the server that runs the services portal (services.cecs.pdx.edu) for an operating system upgrade. This should happen at about 5pm on Friday, January 2nd. The downtime is expected to be short (about an hour tops). When it is down, users will not be able to submit CAT-managed card access requests, do locker management, or pay for additional printing quota. On Thursday, December 18th, we will be patching all our Linux systems. The work will also include an operating system upgrade to our Stash File Server. While the work will mainly affect Linux based systems and services, Windows users’ access to stashes will be down during the Stash File Server downtime. The work will begin at 5pm (earlier than our usual patch downtimes) and components of the work could stretch on until midnight. The work involves patching and rebooting most Linux hosts (Ubuntu and Rocky9 distros). This includes file servers and computer lab Linux systems.Expect sporadic outages as the patching progresses. Systems/services affected will include: - linux.cs.pdx.edu - ada/babbage/dbclass/quizors - CS - CS Linux lab systems in FAB 88 - CS - linux.cecs.pdx.edu - ruby/rita - general MCECS - Linux systems in FAB 55-17 - general MCECS - phobos/deimos/mo/auto - ECE - openVPN - Linux home directories and research stashes - Windows access to project/research stashes We will work with our users on dedicated research systems to schedule an acceptable time to patch them. However, file server downtimes will also affect them regardless. Research and project stashes will be down while the related file server has its OS upgraded. This will affect Windows users accessing stashes. Make sure that you have saved any open files and logged out before the reboots begin.
