[Cee-grad-students] Dec 1 - Blocking known or likely Windows 10 systems from the Internet
by Janaka Jayawardena 25 Nov '25

25 Nov '25
Sometime on Monday, December 1, we will be blocking internet access to all known or likely Windows 10 systems on the wired MCECS network. Over the Summer, we worked with a number of identifiable systems and their users. We are now at the final stage of that process, especially for systems where user identities are unknown. - Users of CAT supported Tier 1 or Tier 2 systems that need to remain running Windows 10 will experience this block. - For Tier 3 (unmanaged) systems: - If you were running a Tier 3 Windows 10 system and have since upgraded to Windows 11 or Linux, please contact us immediately at support(a)cat.pdx.edu. We may not know of that change and include you in the block. - If you are intentionally running a Tier 3 Windows 10 system, please let us know. You will be blocked but we’ll also be able to update our information. After the deadline, all affected systems will find themselves cut off from the Internet. (ie: a user on the system will not be able to access any sites that are not on the campus network). After Dec 1, if you discover your system exhibiting signs of the block and believe it is in error, please let us know ASAP. We have run into a few discrepancies in our Tier 3 systems records. -- Janaka Jayawardena IT Director - MCECS

[Cee-grad-students] DOWNTIME: Friday, 11/14/2025 - 6PM, Windows Servers
by Janaka Jayawardena 12 Nov '25

12 Nov '25
There will be REBOOTS of all MCECS supported Windows Servers at 6 PM on Friday, November 14th, 2025. This work should be completed by 7 PM. This will include the Windows Homedirs (N: drives) and roaming profiles, access to Stashes, Printing, Networked Applications and Network Licenses. This work is needed to ensure that Windows Updates have been applied to our Servers. It is best to logout from your Windows account prior to that time. Patches will be released for CAT supported Windows 11 Workstations on Wednesday (11/12/2025). Desktops that have not been patched should reboot for patches at 6 PM Friday evening. The few remaining users of Windows 10 systems should note that your systems will not be receiving any more patches. Systems we suspect are running Windows 10 will be quarantined from accessing the Internet shortly. This is as a security precaution to protect computers at PSU. This work is not expected to affect any Linux systems. As always if you have questions please contact: support(a)cecs.pdx.edu -- Janaka Jayawardena IT Director - MCECS _______________________________________________ Allofthem mailing list -- allofthem(a)lists.cecs.pdx.edu To unsubscribe send an email to allofthem-leave(a)lists.cecs.pdx.edu
